So many of us grew up hearing “no pain -no gain” not only in life, but in exercise, sports and rehabilitation. Is no pain no gain really an appropriate way to think about healing and rehabilitation? NO. There certain times when it is necessary to work through discomfort to progress as expected with an exercise or rehabilitation program. It is important to know the difference. That’s where experienced medical professionals including physical therapists and athletic trainers come into play.
In reality, it is much more like pain no gain. When our bodies produce pain, we should listen and adjust our activities. This is especially true in rehabilitation from injuries and surgery. Listen to your body. It is an exquisite system giving complex and accurate feedback. Be wise. Listen. Heal.
