As a professional we have been learning more and more about how the core muscles including the trunk and hips are critically important to upper and lower extremity function.
This has become a priority in the rehabilitation of all individuals, athletes and non-athletes alike, with shoulder problems. Quite commonly one hears of athletes who developed shoulder and arm problems after struggling with hip and low back problems. When the correct mechanics and core muscle forces cannot produce a smooth and coordinated transition through the shoulder into the arm, mechanics change and injuries occur. The more we learn about core stability the more we come to understand how important it is for lower extremity functions, especially knee problems. More and more research has confirmed this.
This is why there has been such an emphasis upon core strengthening. There are many ways to accomplish this. Exercises that strengthen the abdominal and back muscles as well as provide balance and endurance are very important. A good general exercise program must include these types of exercises. There are many resources available to learn how to do this. Pilates are one popular method. There are many others. Find an exercise program that you like and that you can tolerate.
