When is the best time to have a steroid injection? Steroid medications can be very effective in decreasing inflammation. The best way to put out a fire is sometimes to dump a big bucket of water right on the fire. That’s kind of how we might best explain a steroid injection. By putting the medication precisely at the spot of the inflammation (ie the “fire”), it can be most effective. Often in our office we use ultrasound to localize the precise location of the inflammation and to inject the medication exactly in that spot. So how long does an injection last? It all depends on how big the fire is and how big the bucket of water is! It is hard to predict but often is an effective tool in our toolbox. Learn more about “cortisone” injections here.
